  • An SME middle manager leading an R&D team looking at new ways to treat tuberculosis. She uses a forum on the SBC site to post a question and start an online discussion, looking for suggestions. Some of the comments are from very different scientific disciplines to hers, such as nanotechnology. The forum gives her several new lines of enquiry for her R&D programme; and searching the members directory leads to a new research partnership with a university researcher who can help her.

  • A hospital researcher who has heard an increasing number of references to ‘open innovation’ in medical research but isn’t sure what it means. To find out more he visits the site and explores several areas including blogs, news, and a multi-media library of background information on open innovation.  He registers and signs up to the RSS feed.

  • A small biotech company has recently acquired venture capital investment to expand the company from 5 employees to 20. It therefore needs a new workplace offering both lab and office space. The general manager visits the SBC site to find out what facilities it offers, and who the other tenants are.   He decides to make contact with the SBC team to find out more about the tenancy offer.

  • An academic studying new biomarkers for cardiovascular disease has some research outputs that could have commercial value. He registers on the SBC site, describes his idea and submits it. The SBC team review it and come back with some advice for next steps forward.

  • A phd looking for events in the sector to improve his knowledge of entrepreneurship. Would look at the events section and the resource library.
