Four in 10 Brits immune to flu symptoms raising hopes of new vaccine

Date: 16/06/2015

Nearly half of Britons are immune to the symptoms of flu, scientists have discovered, raising hopes that a vaccine could be created which harnesses their natural protection to fight pandemics.

A four year study by University College London and Oxford University found that 43 per cent of people will not come down with fever, coughs, headaches or fatigue even if they become infected with the virus.

And despite carrying the virus, they are also much less likely to spread it to others.

The researchers discovered that around half of people have developed a high level of immunity from previous infections which protects them from not only seasonal flu, but also pandemic flu.

It offers the possibility that a universal vaccine could be created which reduces the severity and spread of not only seasonal flu, but more worrying strains like bird and swine flu.
